Aye, copy! Were you running today? Did you outshine me? It’s fine with me either way!★
―Mayano Top Gun

Profile[]

Evasion, interception, pursuit… A genius girl who commands all styles of running, changing it up at will. She’s quite a rambunctious troublemaker. In any case, she runs based on how she’s feeling in the moment, and has an inconsistent race record (though it seems she doesn’t care about that at all.) She has an innocent, childlike personality, always making fun of the trainer, but recently she’s begun to grow up a little and act her age. Whenever she wins, she throws exaggerated kisses to the crowd.

Appearance[]

Mayano Top Gun is a horse girl who has long chestnut orange hair in a short-tailed two side up hairstyle as well as orange eyes. She wears a brown bandana around her right ear.

Her design is clearly influenced by the movie Top Gun (her jacket is nearly identical to that worn by Maverick). While not exactly dressed to fly a Tomcat, a Super Hornet, or a Lightning II, her racing outfit consists of a yellow, green and white set of short shorts with the lower half of a parachute harness with ejection seat handles and crop top under a bomber jacket adorned with many badges. She also wears a pair of brown thighhighs, sneakers and a pair of dog tags.

When it came to promote Top Gun: Maverick (or, rather, due to her very presence), she was the natural choice to advertise the movie.

Notes[]

  • In 1995, the Great Hanshin Earthquake struck Kobe, and his owner Dr. Yu Tadokoro lost his own hospital and his brother. Top Gun won Kikka Sho and encouraged him, and people in Kobe. In this year, a baseball team in Kobe Orix Blue Wave[Note 1] also became a league champion. Sugimoto's commentary refered to the two victory by the Kobe horse and the team.

Trivia[]

  • Her jacket is an homage to the original Top Gun film. However, it was too similar, so it was changed in July 2021.
  • On her and "his" birthday in 2021, the film's sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, offered their congratulations on "them" on their Japanese official Twitter account. On August 28, it was announced that horse girl Mayano Top Gun would become an "advertising pilot" for the movie.
    • She consequently appeared in an alternate official Japanese movie poster for Maverick, replacing Tom Cruise's Capt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in front of an F-18 Hornet.[2]
    • Her voice actor Mio Hoshitani and Tokai Teio's Machico appeared on the release event.
    • In the game version, the movie poster was on the bulletin board in the Trasen Academy entrance.

Real Life[]

The Mach shock wave.
Kikka Sho and Arima Kinen at four[Note 2], Takarazuka Kinen at five, and spring Tenno Sho at six.
As though he had aimed, he got a number of big titles.
It is fresh in our memory the historic showdown against Narita Brian at the Hanshin Dai Shoten.
The stronger opponents become, the more his tactics gets kaleidoscopic with Seiki Tabara's reining technique.
When to move, and where to come from. Rivals are always exposed to Top Gun's threat.
He aims precisely and finds opportunities sensitively. Once he catches a victory in his shooting range, he accelerates in a flash.
His finishing moves are the very Mach shock waves.
―JRA Heroes Poster[3]

Mayano Top Gun is a racehorse in the middle of 1990s. He won four G1s with kaleidoscopic racing tactics.

  • His crown name Mayano comes from Mt. Maya in Kobe. Top Gun is the movie name.
  • His jockey Seiki Tabara took different tactics at every G1 win. He was whimsical, so Tabara decided his tactics after the starts. That is because of his nickname "The Kaleidoscope".
  • 1996 Hanshin Dai Shoten, he and Narita Brian finished closely by head. Though he lost in second, it was told as one of their best bouts.
  • Sakura Laurel, Marvelous Sunday and he are the 1997 Old Horse Top Three. They fought at 1996 Tenno Sho Autumn, Arima Kinen, and 1997 Tenno Sho Spring.
